TRIP – Urbanna Creek / Rappahannock River
One of my favorite places in Virginia – Urbanna! I have had a boat here for most of my life and always enjoy sailing, swimming or paddling in “the creek”. Urbanna Creek leads down from Saluda into town and out to the Rappahannock River about 8 miles up from the Chesapeake Bay. This area is of course tidal salt water, but the creek opens up like a lake and has many tributaries to “gunk hole” through on a very hot July day.
The parking area is a bit small and can fill up with trucks and trailers on holidays and weekends. There is a concrete launch ramp and a pier. The Town of Saluda is just 5 minutes away with all the amenities you might need. The “lake” is a great place to practice your water skiing if you bring your powerboat.
Paddling down the creek through town, you can go into the Rappahannock River and enjoy the nice sandy beaches. It’s a great way to hang out and stay cool in the summer. Stinging Nettles can be a problem some years, but I didn’t see any on this trip.
The Wilderness Systems Pungo 120 is a great sit-inside Kayak for slow moving rivers and creeks like those in Urbanna VA. It is ideally suited for recreational paddling and day trips. This kayak has plenty of room for you and your gear, and is very stable for new and seasoned paddlers alike. At 6’ 1”, I find it very easy to get in and out of. It tracks straight and glides easily through the water.
