TRIP – Urbanna Creek / Rappahannock River
One of my favorite places in Virginia – Urbanna!
I have had a boat here for most of my life and always enjoy sailing, swimming or paddling in “the creek”. Urbanna Creek leads down from Saluda into town and out to the Rappahannock River about 8 miles up from the Chesapeake Bay. This area is of course tidal salt water, but the creek opens up like a lake and has many tributaries to “gunk hole” through on a very hot July day.
The parking area is a bit small and can fill up on holidays and weekends. There is a concrete launch ramp and a pier. The Town of Saluda is just 5 minutes away with all the amenities you might need. The “lake” is a great place to practice your water skiing if you bring your powerboat.

Here’s a view from the air! The boat landing can be busy in the summertime with all the fishermen launching and loading their boats.

Paddling down the creek through town, you can go into the Rappahannock River and enjoy the nice sandy beaches. It’s a great way to hang out and stay cool in the summer. Stinging Nettles can be a problem some years, but I didn’t see any on this trip.
